The food industry has been deeply rooted in the Dunn family for the last 43 years. With family-owned venues across Calgary and Saskatchewan, Kensington resident Jennifer and her business partners took a leap five-years ago when they took over Tenth Street Landing and Kensington Liquor Cellar. She has now completely renovated and revamped both venues to cater to the diverse clientele of the Kensington neighbourhood.
“We felt it was the perfect opportunity to make it into something more our style, and transform it into a venue offering a more diverse menu than the average pub or liquor store.”
The Landing specializes in elevated traditional pub fare. They proudly make most of their dishes in house, by hand. For Jennifer, it’s important to take pub classics and introduce a homemade feel, while still being creative in the making of their dishes.
“I’m a big Foodie, I’m constantly inspired by magazines, food trends and Pinterest – and I love to work with our kitchen manager and inspire him to create something unique.”
At The Landing their house-made burgers and unique pizzas like their award winning lobster mac & cheese and pierogi are definite crowd favourites. Their breakfast menu, served from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. has also begun to see a following with their breakfast pizza, and $5 Sunday breakfast. For those wanting to enjoy the food without the travel time, The Landing has also introduced a delivery service for all of their menu items.
When you head next door the Kensington Liquor Cellar, you’ll find a wide selection of craft beers that are tough to find anywhere else. Jennifer wanted to offer an experience for customers that provided them with a big selection and extremely knowledgeable staff.
“Most of the staff have been around since day one, and have a lot of experience in wine. They are constantly working to expand their own knowledge to provide insight and product information to their customers.”
Jennifer and her team have been working hard to create a venue that’s friendly and welcoming to both men and women, and are passionate about giving back to the community. When asked about her advice to new business owners in the area, she feels it’s all about being true to yourself.
“Don’t compare yourself to other people, don’t try to compete with other people. Be the best at being who you want to be. Stay true to who you are and what’s important to you, and you’ll find success.”
